Post subject:  DataTraveler Max USB 3.2
Client provided DataTraveler Max USB 3.2 memory stick.

Client states the device was plugged into a thunderbolt port on a notebook computer. He heard a "pop" sound. The USB memory stick no longer works and the thunderbolt port is dead too.

Upon inspection I visibly see 2 IC's which are damaged.

"rDDMC" and "5AR"

I'll source a replacement, however I wanted to know if anyone had any knowledge of what these chips are. This memory stick has a much more complex PCB that your typical run of the mill USB 3.2 device. I figure if I know what they're function is I can possibly determine if the NAND is dead.

I can't find anything with a quick look but the 5AR rings a bell from somewhere. fzabkar has a sixth sense for this, Looks like stepdown convertors for the controller and nand, I doubt you'll find a datasheet for the controller but what are the specs on vcc/vdd on the nand. That far in you have have issues have you checked their vouts for shorts?

The outputs of each converter are at the junctions of the corresponding inductor and capacitor. Measure the resistance to ground at those points. That will tell you if any outputs are shorted.

"5AR" (SAR ?) looks to be pin compatible with RT8010GQW. Just be careful because the feedback voltage (0.6V) and switching frequency may not be the same.

RT8010GQW, Richtek, 1.5MHz, 1A, High Efficiency PWM Step-Down DC/DC Converter, 2.5V to 5.5V input, marking ET, adjustable:

If you measure the two resistors on the feedback pin, that would help to calculate the expected output voltage.

Does the donor have the same IC markings? Sometimes the factory will substitute a compatible second source which may be easier to identify.
