Post subject:  Gigabyte 120GB SSD got thunderstruck

So i got this Gigabyte SSD drive running Phison PS3111-S11-13. It got thunderstruck and have some blown components with a short circuit. Plugging into PC3000 shows all kinds of spikes, same with FW pins plugged in. Upon closer inspection i found 2 blown components. Replaced them however the short still persist.

Tried voltage injection and found out the problem was the Controller. With the controller lifted - The short is gone/

I reballed and resoldered a new controller from the same Gigabyte 120GB drive PS3111-S11-13. However now when plugging into PC3000. It shows no signs of life. No amps drawn

What can be the reason?? Can anyone provide voltage diagram where can i test the voltage??

Many Thanks!

Measure the voltages at the 3 inductors.

I think all 3 DC-DC converters were damaged, not just 2.

The third converter can be seen here:

RT8010GQW, Richtek, 1.5MHz, 1A, High Efficiency PWM Step-Down DC/DC Converter, 2.5V to 5.5V input, marking ET, adjustable:

Measure the feedback resistors to confirm that the FB voltage is correct for this layout.

So this are the voltages that i got :(

5v going in the resistor 0v going out

Are you measuring the voltages between inductor and ground (correct), or between the ends of the inductor (wrong)?

yes. Between inductor and ground

i do have 5v input in each of the of the Step-out converters. However no output at all Vin 5v - Vout 0v

Measure the resistances between each inductor and ground. If there is no short, and if the EN-able pins of each converter are at 5V, then the ICs must all be faulty. But you replaced all of them, so how could that be possible? :-?

So eventually i did not manage to find the fault of the SSD. Maybe the board was damaged internally because of the lightning

So i've gone through Chip swap procedure instead.

It was so lucky that All data got fully recovered!

May I ask how you desoldered the chips?

They are both sitting on top of each other (but on different sides) and I've never managed to desolder pairs like that without any thermal damages. Practised on three pendrives from my junkbin but all had 90% read errors afterwards.

I have a heat plate that set to 250C to heat the whole board first. On the bottom side i use heat resistant tape to stick to those 2 chips. You can stick 2-3 layers if you so afraid of burning those chips.

My hot air station set to 320-350C air 50-60.

I use my thermometer, and right when the solder heats up at melting point (around 270-290) I lift the chips off. The time to melting point is about 10-25 seconds

Hold the drive above the bench with your tweezers by the nand and gently and evenly heat the chip, when the solder is liquid the board weight will pull it away which will be long before you heat the nand on the other side. All you need to do is to make sure you heat the entire chip evenly - like most things it just takes a little practice.
