The burnt component appears to be the NPN driver transistor for an external activity LED. The other is a dual LDO regulator, and it is undoubtedly functional. The collector of the transistor is probably connected to pin #11 of the SATA power connector. This pin also serves as a Staggered Spin-Up input. It is normally grounded by the PSU cable, so I suspect that some misadventure with mixed modular cabling may have overvolted the transistor. Fortunately, the flash controller appears to have survived. You should be able to remove the burnt transistor without affecting the functionality of the SSD. A photo of the complete PCB would help to test my diagnosis. If the resistor measures OK, and if the ENable pin of the IC is high, then I would think that there would be no need to be concerned. Just measure the two outputs (1.8V and 3.3V) to be sure. I'm thinking like easily add perhaps balloons with some comments/thoughts and plain text on components - just like in your image - but with the bonus of editing all text / drawings at a later time, instead of working directly on the image data. Something like Visio, using a photo as background and then add annotations on the fly. There must be some software specifically designed for image annotation, but which one? |
