| Post subject: | SN770 4k LBA size issues |
I've been trying to change my 1TB WD SN770 from the default 512 logical "sector" size to 4k. I used nvme-cli format in Linux to change it, and verified it did change. However when trying to install Windows 11, I would get frequent BSOD. I didn't try installing Linux, but in googling it seems this particular model has problems running in 4K LBA mode regardless of OS. I was thinking it might have something to do with the HMB, which was causing BSOD for the 2TB model last year. WD issued a firmware update for the 2TB model to fix that problem, but no firmware updates were sent for the 1TB model (which didn't have that specific issue). I reverted back to 512 LBA and it runs fine. I guess I know it doesn't make much difference, but I want to dig deep and understand what exactly could be the firmware bug going on. Some other sources I've used; https://forums.sandisk.com/t/sn770-nvme ... ors/357660 https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/discussions/14793 While running in 512 mode, it's using a 200MB HMB size (according to hwinfo). So my question then; what can I do to play with the HMB size to see if that affects anything, or does anyone know the details of what WD changed in the firmware for the 2TB model to fix that bug? |
