Post subject:  128GB TRM SSD gets hot when shorting ROM pins

Hi, i have this TRM 128GB SSD that died and wont boot up
SM2259XT controller

Plugging it in. It draws 0.07amps-0.11amps and doesnt show in Disk manager. PC3000 BSY lights up and stuck there

I have tried looking for and testing the ROM pins but don't know if they are correct
4 couple of pins below with label J2 in the middle
2 Set of pins labeled JP3 and JP4

Upon shorting 2 bottom points of J2. The SSD drawed 0.4-0.6amps and the right side near the IC. I measure the IC which is fine. Maybe i am shorting the wrong points

Shorting other points like Jp3 and JP4 did nothing. the SSD still stayed in 0.07amps

Can anybody help me diagnose this case?

Those could be VCC and GND.

Measure the voltages at the 3 inductors.

So i measured the voltages

Obviously the converter with an output voltage of 0V is your problem. Now measure the resistance between the inductor and ground. If it is shorted, then either the converter IC is bad, or there is a shorted component at the output.

I measured the inductor. it is not shorted. But all components around it and the inductors itself shows 0V when plugged in

The IC must be bad or disabled. Can you identify its markings?

I find it hard to believe that all those capacitors are measuring 0V. At least some of them must be connected to the 5V supply.

Measure the voltages on the pins of the working S2CA1 IC and then measure those same pins on the dead IC.

So i measured those IC. The ICs are labeled S2DKA

It does appear that the IC is faulty. It is enabled, but there is no output.

The IC could be similar to this:

https://datasheet.lcsc.com/lcsc/Wuxi-Chipown-Micro-electronics-APS2420ATBER_C130331.pdf

The pinout appears to match, but the feedback voltage is different. Yours is 0.7V whereas the APS2420 has an FB voltage of 0.6V.

The marking code appears to be S2xyp, but I haven't been able to find this IC. However, if you can confirm the FB voltage, I may be able to find a compatible substitute.

PG = Power Good output, active high.

Make sure that the inductor is not open circuit (unlikely).

This is a 3A version of the IC (S6xyp / S5xyp):

I found one of my earlier posts. S2xyp is associated with the 5-pin version, but yours is 6-pin. Very confusing.

APS2420ATBER, Chipown, Synchronous buck regulator, 1MHz,2.0A, 2.5V - 6.5Vin, marking S2xyp, SOT-23-5L:

You can use an adjustable lab PSU to inject a supply voltage after removing the bad IC. Start with 1V and then slowly increase the voltage until the FB pin is at 0.6V. The output from the lab PSU should then be correct.

(Not my idea, but I can't remember where I saw it.)

Well i did found an exact donor board. Measured the IC it is totally working. I swapped the IC over. And just after 1 power up. The IC died just like before swapping

Poof and its gone!

Did you test the donor before cannibalising it? Did you measure its voltages?

If you return the IC to the donor, is the donor now dead?

All I can think of is that there is a shorted load or shorted turns in the inductor.

Yes, the IC of the donor is fully functional because the donor still works and shows in the computer? I did swap back the IC though, and the IC is not dead at all. So the problem is not the IC!

Measure the voltage on the donor, and then carefully inject the same voltage into the patient, assuming there are no shorts.
