Post subject:  Request: Samsung T7 Shield 2TB ASM2362 SPI firmware dump
I tried updating my T7 Shield through samsung magician app, it failed and bricked my SSD. Worst part is that it didn't brick immediately, it bricked after I password locked it again (had to remove the password for the update). Now it's no longer recognised by magician, the blue light doesn't blink, and I can't unlock it.

I let codex do some digging, and this is what it found. I'm a noob, forgive me if it's just slop

"Windows detects the drive as ASMT ASM236X NVME, firmware revision 0, with USB ID 174C:2362. Samsung Magician consequently labels it “Non-Samsung” and cannot read SMART information or unlock it.
Samsung Portable SSD logs from before the failure confirm that this same drive previously identified correctly as Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield, firmware FXI72P2Q. A healthy T7 Shield normally uses Samsung USB ID 04E8:61FB.
The drive still reports its approximately 2TB physical capacity, but Windows exposes only the small FAT Samsung launcher/security partition because the encrypted data area remains locked. This suggests that the ASM2362 bridge’s companion SPI firmware/configuration was corrupted and the controller has fallen back to its factory ASMedia identity.
I’m looking for a complete, untouched ASM2362 SPI-ROM dump from a healthy Samsung T7 Shield 2TB (MU-PE2T0, USB ID 04E8:61FB). I need the original reader output before removing headers, changing the serial number, or preparing it for MPTool. Please also include the dumping tool/version and a SHA-256 checksum if possible.
I already checked the t7.zip from HDDGuru, but it contains Samsung PSSD T7 and belongs to a standard T7 using 04E8:4001, so it is not a matching T7 Shield image. Generic ASM2362 and Crucial X8 firmware dumps are also not suitable.
Since the drive is password-encrypted and contains needed data, I have not formatted, initialized, performed a PSID revert, or flashed any mismatched firmware."

It would be great if someone could share the dump that it's looking for.

If the drive was working after the firmware update but stopped working after you locked it again, and if the problem is now in the SPI flash, then this would suggest that the SPI flash contains your security metadata. If so, then overwriting it with a dump from a donor would not be advisable.

Can you dump your existing SPI flash contents?

The tool reported firmware version 180712_01_00_00 and “Image version not found.” The first 130 bytes contain the ASMedia device header, while all remaining 65,406 bytes are FF.

I don't understand where the firmware version is located. All I see is a header.

I don't know why your dump is mostly empty. I'm only an amateur, but I'm wondering whether access to the full dump is being subverted by some security/protection feature. You'll only be certain if you can dump the physical IC.

I suspect that the FAT partition exists either at the end or start of the user area (UA). The encryption key and password metadata could either be in the SPI flash or in a hidden area of the SSD. This hidden area could be a firmware module or it could be a reserved area of the UA.

Another possibility is that your firmware update wiped the SPI flash, but it would have required a power cycle before you would have noticed this. That's because the contents of the SPI flash would have been unpacked into the bridge IC's RAM, and the bridge would have been running from RAM code. At the next power cycle the bridge would have tried to unpack the new SPI flash code and found it to be empty.

That can be possible. The drive didn't die while connected immediately after locking it. The failed update was 10 days ago and I only found out the drive was dead yesterday. I might've used it one more time after the failed update, but I honestly can't say for sure.

I'm also wondering how a functional bridge would respond if the SSD were actually dead. Would it still enumerate as a Samsung device, or would it identify as Asmedia? Hopefully, one of the pros can enlighten us.

Do you have the update package that you applied? Perhaps we can extract the relevant components?

I don't have the package, unfortunately. I attempted the update through the magician android app. I couldn't find the package in the Android/data/ dir

It seems that your updater erased the data section of the SPI flash, then balked at writing to it. :-?

I would ask Samsung's tech support to provide you with a firmware image or update package, and then hope that it's not encrypted.

I see. Does anyone have any experience with asking samsung support for a firmware image? Would they not just ask me to send the drive in?

This person has been collecting firmware dumps. Perhaps they have a T7 Shield dump.

Correction:

The checksum for the header should include the end-of-block marker (0x5A). However, the same end-of-block marker is not included in the checksum for the code block.
