Hello everyone,

Does anyone have experience resetting the power-on hours counter on Samsung SSDs?

I am interested in methods for different Samsung SSD models, rather than one specific model. Are there any verified tools or manufacturer service procedures that support this? Does support depend on the controller, firmware, or SATA/SAS/NVMe interface?

My current setup is Windows with an external drive enclosure. If a direct connection or specialized hardware is required, please let me know.

Any firsthand experience or technical references would be appreciated. Thank you.

I get your point, but resetting a counter obviously won't make an old SSD new. Has either of you actually done this on a Samsung SSD?

no, but I can't think of a reason to do it, unless the purpose is to deceive. I would be happy to hear alternate views though, and don't begrudge anyone learning anything they want to

If the purpose was to deceive, then the scammer would need to reset other SMART indicators such as Host Writes and P/E Cycle Count or Wear Leveling Count. In fact, I wouldn't be too concerned with the hours if the P/E cycle count were 20 or so. My Samsung SSD has 50K hours and 36 P/E cycles. My Crucial SSD has 20K hours and 6 P/E cycles. Neither has any retired blocks, although the Samsung has gone AWOL around 20 or 30 times.

I do recall that one old model had a 40K hours bug, but that would have been addressed by a regular firmware update.

the bug was not triggered by the counter, rather an overflow of some log, so resetting POH likely does not affect that bug. FW update is a better way to avoid it...
i can't think of any other use of this reset than deception. I would love to hear any though.

Obviously, it's dishonest if intended for resale, but changing the POH count on its own would alert the buyer to the deception, unless the SSDs had similar usage to my own.

If I recall correctly, some WD products will flag any drive that exceeds 3 years of usage, the intention being to schedule it for replacement. That might be one reason to reset the POH count.
