WD800BB-00JHC0 - after PCB replaced, clicking noise

Hello friends,

I've got:
WD800BB-00JHC0
-: 08 OCT 2006
DCM: HSCANTJCA

After I recieved the HDD above it was completely dead, after inspecting the electronics I noticed that a few chips on PCB had burned out.
I decided to replace the PCB. The donor was PCB from:
WD1600JB-00REA0
-: 16 NOV 2006
DCM: HSBHNT2CA

The only thing I made was desoldering the U12 chip (ROM) from original PCB (00JHC0) and solder it in donor PCB (00REA0)

I connected the HDD to PC3000 UDMA + DE and powered on, the clicking noise was heared for about 2-3 seconds and later the disk wasn't clicking, the DRD and DSC icons on the bottom appeared, so I thought it's perfect, but after I run Universal Utility, some error appeared, PC3K has recognized wrong capacity of 37,28GB instead of 80GB.



Please tell me what should I do next ?

By the way, I also found the information that the R120 electronic module could be damaged on original PCB, if so, the head stack probably could be damaged.
Please tell me according to the screen above, do You think that still I need to replace the head stack, or it is not necessary ?

I also don't know what does the red ERR and ABR icon mean ?

Heads/preamp but to be honest if you didn't already know this you probably are not going to have much chance of success

I agree. Having the right tools is no comparison to having the right experience and skills.

You can try disabling individual heads in ROM to identify if there is a single damaged head, but while this will confirm the fault, it will not get you a recovery as the Zones will increase to compensate and this in itself will make data inaccessible.

Maybe you should consider outsourcing this case.

Thanks guys for Your comments. The point is, that nobody was born with any kind of knowledge and I really want to increase my skills and experience in that field. Would You please send me some helpful links which can lead me through the hard process of replacing the head stack, showing all the tricks on which shall I pay attention.
Of course I will make training on an old one HDD. I will unmount the head stack and install it again, if the HDD will turn on without any problems I think that the mission will be succeeded.

No, WD needs special alignment with special equipment + knowledge compared to other drives.
If you will see, you can't do that, i can help but not remotely.

Honestly, no. Nobody is going to tell you how to do it for free or without some exchange of useful information.

I don't mean to be disrespectful here but why do people have this much money tied up into this type of equipment and not have a clue how to use it? Questions like this boggle my mind. You went out and spent a chunk load of money on this equipment *before* you have done any sort of... ahh, forget it. I'm going to work myself out of getting a good night sleep...

This job is not a question of having pc3k or not. And DR is not a question of having PC3k or not even. (it is a great tool though)

I wonder if the two PCBs (original burnt 2MB and donor 8MB cache) are compatible for this drive. I don't remember that now. Maybe somebody will tell VoodooPL this basic information.

If this PCB is not compatible, find same PCB model and swap ROM again.

As Damon says, incompatible PCB would have been the first thing to check before messing with heads. Boards must be electrically compatible, ie. they must have the same electrical traces and component numbering schemes. Sometimes different number boards can still be compatible.

The suffix is different ,one is 000 the other one is 002 .
