I was thinking yeah I know I shouldnt
But it seems to me that the idea of the Global Solutions used for the PC3000 Flash SSD could be used for an AceLab managed firmware database. Which could be included in your yearly support & accessed through the PC3000 UDMA software. That way users can upload firmware & make it a lot easier to find those elusive little buggers that are hard to find. Also as the database expands in time it will make the service better & better. Currently it can be very hit & miss to find the correct firmware & something like this would be extremly benifitial to AceLabs customers. I know this forum has a section for firmware downloads but its not as big as it could be.

Post here what you think & maybe you never know AceLab might think its a good idea & make it happen

I think this is an excellent idea and forwarded the link to this thread to Elena @ Ace Labs. Of course, there will always be those who are tight fisted and won't share; however, I suspect the majority of us would be more than happy to contribute to a central database.

It could be as simple as a click of a button in PC3000. "Upload database" or "search and download"

Nice, I will contribute, if the feature is not automated already. Of course, bad modules, etc., should be eliminated, by some sort of check if the function would be automatic.

We have over 20k drives and we have a person who imports whole firmware copy when an item gets sold. We have a very large DB that we would love to share.

Great idea! This will help everybody. For sometime we used Retroshare to share resources with a bunch of Data recovery engineers arround the world. It was the best solution. No need to upload anywhere, you just shared your Profiles. But of course there is still the Database that could not be shared or searched by retroshare.

I hope this Global solutions idea will be materialized in the near future by Acelabs.

Will be a great pitty if they dont & what a missed opertunity.
As the database grows over time it will get better & better.

Otherwise the only other option is for someone here to design a webiste & do this themselves & ask members/dr companies to donate a copy of their firmware collections to get it going.

How do I know some scammy place isn't uploading a whole bunch of screwed up FWs just to mess with everyone else?

You cant even now? unless you only use your own database & never ask for firmware?

So how about if the "uploader" of each set of firmware files was recorded & shown next to the download link - so the same "reputation" mechanism would apply, as it does around here? Just a thought...

I like this idea, aswell as the overall suggestion, I do recall having seen versions of this come and go in the past, I am in more of a position now to consider this more as I work for a division of a server hosting company with our own datacentres etc... Always handy for web projects!

I'm personally signed up to this, and will discuss with people here...

I did get a reply from Acelabs forum which basically said:

That they have talked about this and that some day they believe that this will appear but maybe not as a website based resource with download links, but idea about a big shared database is certainly of current interest.

Maybe this has been suggested already but this could be accomplished pretty easily using RSS feeds and a Bittorrent client like uTorrent, which can automatically download any files by setting an RSS feed. Of course it would require a pretty sizable server to store all the files unless users were allowed to upload .torrent files for the packages instead of the files themselves.
