Read Channel Shorting on Seagate Boards

Anyone have any advice on how to time shorting the read channel on a Seagate ST3000DM001. The first time I tried it, I got the drive to come DRD after shorting the board about 2 seconds after powering on. I had to power down the drive, but have not been able to get the drive to come DRD since. Your help would be much appreciated.
