ID HD by "Family" -- i.e., "F3" or "51, Anak" ... etc. ??

I need the LIST of Family names ... each model HD corresponds to.

Does anyone have it - or know how to get it ?

I'm under the impression there's either a:
- List from Mfr.
- 3rd Party List.
- Method by which you can infer it...

If not -- HOW would the first person who identifies the Family do so? - [METHODOLOGICALLY]


[WHAT] has less long term utility than [HOW].
- "What" is like someone handing you a fish ...
- "How" is like being taught to fish.

I'd really rather know the entire list (within practical limits) ... or how you figure it out. Which numbers off a drives label might indicate it, etc.


I'm rather frustrated by this, because I've asked the same question, always asking "HOW" ... and at best receiving "what." I'd rather someone said, "you have to pay for the list, we can't tell you." Than pretend like none exists.

For Seagate's drives, type Ctrl-L in terminal.

For WD's drives, if you power up the PCB on its own, you may see something like "ROM MODEL HAWK". Module 0x11 may also have a similar text string.

Samsung drives generally print the family name on the PCB artwork.

For a more general approach, examine the ROM dump. You may find something there.

For example, WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 is an "ARIESHC8SATA":

Sometimes the manufacturer's publicly available documentation will have the family name.

If I am not mistaken you have PC3000? In the initial utility, there are links (top right two icons on my PC3000) that take you to a pretty comprehensive list of drive families for all drive models. As time has gone by the list is a little outdated, but still probably tells you all you need to know about 95% of drives.

Or, you can just search the model (including the part after the "-" in the case of WDs) in a firmware collection such as files.hddguru.com and see what family those resources are saved under.

Not that it's convenient, but now at least there [is] a physical resource to pole or algorithm to use -- if I have no other method resource.

Identifying drives couldn't be [exclusively] dependent on the Utility to auto-select it, etc. because not all drives can even identify.

Definitely wrote this stuff down in my list

With practice & record-keeping, this makes me a step closer to being autonomous
