Hello everyone!

My name is Dmitry, and I need assistance with my Kingston NVMe SSD. When connecting it to Acelab PC-3000, the device is detected with a BYS error (state). I have checked the connection, and everything is physically fine, but I suspect the issue may be related to corrupted controller firmware.

SSD specifications:

Brand: Kingston
Capacity: 256GB
Model: SFH64B08UCT1-60
Serial Number: 115268365090-3
Controller: Phison FH64B08UCT1-60
Interface: PCIe NVMe 3.0 x 4, M.2 2280
Additional markings: RBU - SNS8154P/256GJ, 9997138 - 042A00G, 50026B728675B800, 8177216 - 3V.A. REM, 20-82-10073-A00.
Has anyone encountered a similar BYS error with a Phison-controlled SSD? Are there recommendations for diagnosing or reflashing the controller firmware? Could additional equipment (e.g., a programmer or adapter) be required to resolve this issue? I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions for data recovery!

Thank you in advance!

This drive is based on PS5008 (usually), which should be supported by PC3k.

Why would you want to flash the firmware if you're looking to recover its data?

Just short the drive, connect to pc3k, load loader and etc.

Thank you very much for your help and advice! I really appreciate your support.

You suggested shorting the drive to access it via Acelab PC-3000. Could you please clarify which specific contacts on this SSD need to be shorted? Is there a risk of damaging the device if done incorrectly? I would be grateful for a detailed description or a link to an instruction!

Thank you in advance!

upload a picture of the drive, but usually it's two points at the other end of the connector, they're pretty obvious.

Do you have pc-3000 portable III?

Thank you so much for your help and guidance! I really appreciate your time and expertise.

As requested, I’m attaching a picture of the drive to this message. Thank you for the tip about the two points at the other end of the connector—I’ll try to locate them.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the PC-3000 Portable III. Is there a way to resolve this issue without the PC-3000 Portable III, or do I need to purchase it? I’m very eager to learn more about this field and would be incredibly grateful for any advice or recommendations on how to proceed!

Thank you again for your support!

You're welcome.

However, without PC3k Portable, you won't be able to proceed.
Assuming that the drive suffers from a fw fault or a controller fault (which is not certain at this point and the drive needs to be evaluated properly), it would have to come to the so-called safe mode, then load an appropriate loader via pc3k, then create a virtual translator and start the drive with it.

Buying pc3k portable I think is a very steep move. I mean, it's 20k, I'm not in your pockets, but forking out 20k for one case is a bit crazy. And, as I've said, at this point you don't even know what's wrong with the drive.

My suggestion would be to consult someone in your area that owns pc3k portable and go from there.

Thank you so much for your detailed response and advice! I really appreciate your help and expertise.

I’m very inspired by this field and would love to learn SSD repair. I’ve found this direction incredibly interesting, and I’m eager to dive deeper into it. Could you please guide me on how to get started and recommend any resources for learning SSD repair?

As for the equipment, besides the PC-3000 Portable, are there other tools I could consider for this kind of work, or is the PC-3000 Portable the only reliable solution? I’m ready to invest in equipment for learning purposes, even if it’s a significant investment, as I’m serious about pursuing this path.

Thank you again for your amazing support!

Best regards,

Sometimes it recovers when a hot air fan (120 degrees) or cold spray is applied to the controller.

Hi,

I don't know of any alternative for PC3K Portable.
However, typical SSD SATA drives (not NVMe) can be recovered with the PC3K Express (which is a little cheaper than the Portable) and there is a cheaper alternative, MRT SSD tool, but I've never used it so I don't know how good it is. It should be decent for learning and/or DR purposes and its functionalities are similar to pc3k express SSD version, as I see online.

I guess, if you're serious about diving deep into SSD data recovery, including NVMe drives, you need pc3k portable and there is no alternative (yet).

As for guides etc, I'd start by reading thoroughly the PC3K manuals. There is no easy path here, you'll have to experiment yourself with dummy drives.

Good luck.
