Hello,

There is only one simple solution for you:
Send it to someone, who have the tools for the firmware repairing!

A simple update will not solve your problem, this way you only loose your data...

Regards,
Janos

Unlike Cellphones, motherboards, MP3 players, and a host of other consumer electronics, Hard Drives are not quite so simple. First, it's not quite as simple as 'flashing the firmware' when you have a 'firmware corrupted' problem. Second, it requires expensive hardware and software. No freeware, or even bootleg software, is available to do this.

My advice? Send it to a professional. They will have the knowledge and the equipment. In theory you could do this yourself, but the results wouldn't be as certain, and it will likely cost you more in the end, especially if you attach any value whatsoever to your time.

symbios...

Please listen to rchadwick, he is telling you the truth.

You CANNOT "reflash" the firmware on a hard drive with free tools. You need either PC3000 or Salvation tools to do this.

End of story.

Sorry

If you're in the US, it's around $10,000.00, not including training. If you want to take your chances and fix your drive yourself, this is the way to go.

Yes, that one is fake (Bootleg China Pirates promise the world, and then disappear), and it's an old DOS app which is more difficult to figure out. They charge so much because it takes many years of research and reverse engineering to create a product like this. You could also try Salvation Data. Their suite is cheaper, I think in the $2000-$3000 range.

To get the data, the firmware will need to be "fixed" (No guarantee the drive will be trustworthy, just hopefully good enough to get the data). No linux solutions that I know of. If there was a good, cheap solution, I doubt anyone would pay $2000-$10,000. If you want to do it "free", you could create your own PC3000-like utility. It would take a great deal of research, programming skills, some spare WD drives, and a lot of reverse engineering. If you have no money, and have the skills and time, this might be your best bet. Otherwise, I suspect you might be starting to realize you're out of luck.

Symbios, you never mentioned what the exact symptoms of the failure were. What leads you to believe it's a firmware problem?
