What if the drive spins then starts clicking?

I tried an identical logic board on this drive and same thing...it spins and then starts clicking.

they will click if you didnt move rom.

Personally I thin youtube DIY videos are responsible for a huge amount of the work recieved by professionals, and the reason for more expensive recovery costs.
You need specialst equipment, which can be bought, knowledge which can be gained, and experience which you do not have.

If data is valuable, you need professional assistance to avoid further damaging the drive and its data. If not valuable, feel free to visit youtube and let us know how you get on...

I can just open it up and play around with it.

If I read the above post correctly, it would appear that the consensus is that the problem lies with the PCB, yet you still want to open the drive up. Why is that? If you want a working drive, send it in for RMA before you void it.

I verified it absolutely not spinning, when i tried and connected a different pcb it does spin made knocking sound, that clears the matter that there is no motor jam.

But may be i will try replacing the motor chip on the original pcb.

I have the exact same spin error - on 2 identical drives. Both Seagate 7200.11 500G. lets call them Drive A and Drive B

What happened was I accidentally shorted out drive A's logic board ...

It's F3 Arch. Spildit.. It's not supposed to enter the debug "F"(uck) mode in this scenario..

something not working correctly between pcb and hda - e.g. bad connection. test good working drive, make bad connection with standard procedure, you should get same result.

Hi All, Thanks for all the replies and your support. The customer was not interested to pay more $$$ so we dropped this case. But lessons learnt.... * After referring lot of docs , I think it was the adaptive information which was wrong.

ok let me add some info... I've repaired quite a bit of these drives with the firmware issue I have a cleanroom at my work I'm a computer engineer who has designed hardware and software I'm very meticulous I don't care about this drive's info and would like to open it up and see if I can fix it for the hell of it. So if the drive spins and then starts clicking is it safe to say it is a mechanical failure even if I tried another identical logic board? If so is there a youtube video for this mechanical fix? I'm not sure which part on the inside is broken so I need some input. Thanks

I exchanged the the PCB with an identical one and the same thing happens. This would mean that it has a mechanical failure would it not? Like I said before the data means nothing to me and I'd rather open it up to learn something then sending it out. So if it is a mechanical error is it some part that needs replacing or repairing? Cheers, This tells me that the problem is with the original PCB and that you need to move the ROM from the original PCB to the donor PCB in order to stop the knocking. That being said, if the drive is spinning and knocking with the original PCB, I might suspect a head crash, which is not uncommon with these drives, too.

Both Seagate 7200.11 500G. lets call them Drive A and Drive B What happened was I accidentally shorted out drive A's logic board, so I found Drive B, which was the exact same drive part number and firmware version. I tried Drive B's logic board on Drive A and when the drive tried to spin up, it lightly clicked a few times and spun back down and gave the spin error. Heres the problem - when I returned Drive B's logic board to Drive B, the exact same thing happened! Drive B now gives the Spin Error after spinning up, lightly clicking a few times and spinning down - Exacly like Drive A. Drive B never had anything wrong with it. is it possible that Drive A could have corrupted Drive B's logic board? Both drives are still under warranty, but I want to try every avenue before I send Drive B back to Seagate as they will just give me a new blank drive. Any advice would be appreciated - i cant afford $500 for data recovery services, BTW I'm sorry if I'm Thread-jacking, but the symptoms were so similar I just couldn't resist asking for some feedback on this error Thanks Derek

I would suggest that you begin a new thread and upload a detailed photo of the shorted board. If you can repair the damage that you've done, then you may get back to your original fault.
