Hello everyone,
I'm planning to buy one of two PC-3000 for Data Compass not decided yet. Someone I know who uses PC-3000 said that I can not recover data from clicking hard disk "PCB or head problem maybe". I must fix the problem physically and then connected to PC-3000. But when I was reading ACE Lab web site I found the following:

PC-3000 is not merely a tool but rather a technology, which allows HDD restoration in typical environments of data recovery companies providing access to user data in cases, when a hard drive is physically damaged. The technology has been developed specifically for small businesses and therefore it does not require obligatory use of clean rooms, servo writers or other expensive equipment.

Can you please guys explain to me if that is right.

Well, to be straight forward, PC3000 cannot recover physically damaged drives.
But, it's your own perception, that what you consider "physical". Some peoples consider firmware problem is a physical one, then yes, it can do it.

About clicking specifically, 90% of the times, the clicking is caused by bad Head/PCB, in which case, the only option is to replace the relavant component (PCB/Head/Platters/Chasis/Motor). Neither PC3000, nor Data Compass can do it. You will need more advanced tools to perform such inner operations with hard drives.

What advanced tool do you mean? As far as I know, PC-3000 is the most advanced one. I havent never heard about anything else. Please share your experience with us.

Sorry, it was me who couldn't explain the things..

I should have used the word "Different" rather then "Advanced". PC3000 is merely a tool to work with SA. That's it. No more, no less. But, when there is clicking/no power/no spinning/stuck spindle, you will have to open the drive in the clean (Not the ordinary clean, but the industrial standard Class 10 clean room). No software tools can do this job.

To to these advanced phase of DR, the best thing is to make tools by your own. (Ask any Pro. Most of the pros have made their own tools to work with heads/platters). As, this is the only reliable method to get good working tools. Otherwise, there are a couple of tools made by others, but they are extremely overpriced, plus, they don't perform in most of the cases (Read: They are shit! :mrgreen: )

As a last word, beware of some these "Shit" sellers. If you will read reviews about them, you'll know what I mean.

PC3000 and Data Compass is not developed for same purpose. PC3000 is comparable with HD Doctor. And Data Compass is developed for Extracting data in a different view as a 4th generation DR Tool. More than an Imager.

Totally agree with HardDiskBug about his straight word...

PC3000 + Data Extractor = HD Doctor + Data Compass

The difference is that one installation of PC3000 + Data Extractor will allow the user to work with any brand and model of drive on the one system. As well, Data Extractor can work with a drive that needed PC3000 to load (ie, a Maxtor N40P mounted using a LDR file).

Can Data Compass mount a drive using a LDR file? Or does the user have to fix the drive first with HD Doctor?

All people forget about ability of PC3K to read the data by head map in Data Extractor when one of the heads is damaged. As far as I know ACE also developed very nice thing to read the surface with PHYSICALLY damaged head from WD ROYL without translator problem. In their news written: you can find it in the next update :D
Does salvation data tool support this? I mean ROYLs with damaged head. In my experience successful head swap on the last ROYL models almost impossible

Combination of off the shelf tools +A lot of learning/experience + innovative [i.e creating own custom tools for specialized jobs]. Almost all the tools have their pros and cons, some tools do some aspects of a recovery job more efficient than others. I suppose a lot of it comes down to tool operator's knowledge + experience. A tool [eg pc 3000] in an experienced engineer's hands can recover more data than the same tool in the hands of a beginner/novice. :)
