Profile vs Database in PC3K

February 17th, 2011, 4:34

Just a quick question regarding something I still don't get the concept of.

I've read the relevant section in the manual but I find this russian/english translation difficult at the best of time.

In PC3K when you want to backup HDD resources for example, you get the choice to save to either a Profile or to the Database.

Can someone explain to me what the fundamental difference is between a Profile and an entry in the Database is?

Many thanks

I always use backup to database. For me it's easier than using profile backup. In some cases I use profile backup if I want easy and QUICK access to modules for edit/paste/R&D operations.

Database helps to find the correct FW version for the DUT (Drive Under Test) Using profiles takes time to find the version you require.

Some of my engineers use profile, why, I have no idea!!! Some people like it some people don't.

To backup whole of drive resources you can use:- Service Information>Work With Database>Resource Master Copy Creation in DB

Profile Backup > Files Stored individually in a folder structure
Database Backup > Files Stored in a large container file

Thank you, makes a bit more sense now. Will have to go and investigate it this evening.

Personally, i hate to use DB backup because DB don't work on network storage. (why??? :) )
I allways use profiles, and use DB master copy if i am 1000% sure the drive have OWN firmware without any touch. (for example i have opened the original drive in bag).
This keeps my db in low size and have 100% clean content.
If i can't find what i want from DB i seek in folders quickly and found what i want. :)

my 2 cent.

I like the DB better it is a lot easier to find what I need in and is easy to back up and keep there and you can save the back up to another disk if you want on this one.

I've ended up going with the DB option as well. Works nicely.
Thanks for all the opinions.

Even better, just have one database on central server shared between PC3k's !

Once you have more then one program to work with drives you will quickly get an idea that you cannot use DB
If you use only PC3K - DB is fine
