I sometimes wonder if people purchase PC3000 and begin a DR service with no clue about what to do and simply write at hddguru for step by step support.....

Identification as SABRE can be for a number of reasons. Probably SA cant be reached which is why you see ID from ROM.

Could be SA problem, could be PCB issue, ROM could be damaged / non original, HSA can be bad, spindle motor could be bad....

Basically any situation where SA reading is affected could be cause of this problem.

Proper diagnosis is required.

Would help if you described any symptoms here also.

Alternatively, send to a professional until you have the experience to deal with this yourself...

Totally agree.

But what is the difference between a botched DIY repair from a home user (which we all see so so often) and an attempted repair by someone who has expensive gear with no real experience?

the difference is PC3000. This alone is not enough.

Do customers know they are sending their precious data to somebody who is dependant on a public forum to get a solution?

@icethomas - this is not directed at you specifically, I am speaking generally. I do not know you and maybe you do have lots of experience but maybe never with this specific problem so I cannot judge.

Its just a little uinfair that customers trust their damaged media with people who only make things worse and leave experienced pros to pick up the pieces and the customer to pick up a hefty DR bill.
