Safe mode on hard disk

hi guys. i heard a lot of putting the hard disk on safe mode. Basically its like spinning up the firmware from your database and not using the hard disk. well my question is how do we put the hard disk on safe mode. Is it different for all types of hard disk does it differs from one model to another. any one can help me on that please.
