 Post subject: Does anybody know what family belong this WD?

It is a 12.5 mm HDD 2,5 with 6 heads.

That's right.

Only ever seen two of these 500gb 3-platter things, and both of them had horrific platter damage :-(

i get boat loads of these; almost always heads/media damage.

Yep. They seem to be especially prone to having the lid pressed down onto the heads or platters.

Really? As I said, we have only seen 2 (maybe 3) of the 500gb 3-platter model.

750gb and 1tb we see every day!!!
