This is a grizzly family drive. Is it possible to start the drive in safe mode?

I have the PC-MXSAFE adapter connected as shown in the manual (presume its the two pins immediately next to the SATA port, and green wire next to the SATA port). I have no jumpers set on the MX board. MX board is powered on. I get DRD DWF DRQ CRR flags. The PCB is good as I have tested it on another drive. Any idea?
