Hi All,

We receive this drive WD3200AAJS, with little knocking. Drive comes to ready state read all FW.
Able to create head map and image all drive with Head 0 only, with Head 1 drive start knocking.
We source a donor drive swap the head and again same situation still can't read from Head 1.

I believe that head 1 got crashed immediately on power on.
I have an other donor drive, Any hint how to proceed further.

Thanks for the reply.

What happens if you put the heads back in the donor? Can donor read from H1?

That's not what I meant. Put the donor (i.e. Previously known good) heads BACK into the donor, to see if they have been damaged by media damage on the patient.

I have tried two donor drives with same pre amp revision, infact donor drives were of the same date but no success, originally patient drive head 1 was bad, I have imaged patient drive with Head 0 with original heads without any problem. Drive gives correct ID, capacy in pc3k, even drive get detects in bios but with little knocking.

With donor heads can't read from head 1 as well, and when I swap heads back to donor drive can read from donor drive with both heads.

anybody has any clue ?
thanks

Did you try to replace the PCB first?

Is ROM original ad head map was not messed up ?

Did the client had chinese tools to depop heads ?

Strange thing as media damage would have killed the donnor head as well ....

Is it a refurb drive with just one working head ?

Why would that make any difference? All heads use the same read and write differential pairs, and the head select mux uses the same 3 pins for serial comms with the preamp.

AISI, Spildit's suggestion makes sense, and it might be possible to verify it by comparing the ROM MODs against their SA backups, if they exist.

welcome back .. :)

The Head Map is ok and Rom is native.
Drive is not refurbished.

I tried different pcb as well with no success.
