Diagnostic _must_ precede remedial action.

Want to self teach by experimentation?
Fabulous, but do it on your own devices (spares n repairs from ebay etc), not on a clients.

If i'm not mistaking this is a wd usb drive. If its only the upper platter that is scratched we could still do a partial recovery with the other layers.
Would give you around 70% of the data (no big files like movies however).
