Dear Gurus

I have the following Sata HD in my hand that need recovery:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 - 500 GBytes
ST3500320AS
P/N: 9BX154-303
Firmware: SD15
Date Code: 08356
Site Code: KRATSG
WWN: 500c50009877225

Now the strange thing happens.
The drive is visible by Windows with its partitions and files. Of course when you try to read files you get errors.
Trying to perform a sector-by-sector copy with HDD Raw Copy utility showed me that only the first 6 000 000 LBA can be read, then I get read errors.

I try to read the drive with PC-3000 attaching it to the board's CH0 but there the Drive's ID is never read and it is not getting ready.

If I put the drive directly on motherboard's SATA PC-3000 Data Extractor is able to identify the drive and all of it's parameters. Of course copying only works for the first 6 000 000 LBAs.

Do you think there's a way to open the drive with PC-3000 while connected to the utility board?

Do you think it's a platter surface issue or something else that could be fixed with opening the hard-drive case?

Thank you in advance for your time.

KC

1) Check PC3K cables
2) Check drive's translator.

The problem you describe should be solved by conventional old method of repair of 7200.11.
however.
Fix UNC Errors.....by pc3000 if you have .
fix translator...by dfl---ddp if you have.
one key fix by salvation data.if you have hdd for seagate.
If some one has already run commands like m0,2....or m,0...... the translator has problems....or P list corrupted.

I'm with Northwind on this one, check your terminal connection to the drive. Probably isn't communicating.

You are using a terminal connection right?

Hello Gurus and thank you for your response.

I managed to make it work and visible from PC-3000. Running the utility is now able to Identify the drive parameters, and everything.

Then when I use data Extractor to do sector-by-sector copy to another drive everything goes OK up to LBA
->LBA = 6 023 578

->LBA = [ 0.. ], Step = 256
->LBA = [ 0.. ], Step = 256
->LBA= [ 0.. Skip Sectors
->LBA = [ 651 521.. ], Step = 256
->LBA = 6 023 169, Step = 256 [Drive is not ready!!!]
Software reset... Ok
->LBA = 6 023 377, Step = 1 [Drive is not ready!!!]
->LBA = 6 023 377, Jump = 200
Software reset... Ok
<-LBA = [ 6 023 377.. 6 023 577], Step = 1 1
->LBA = [ 6 023 578.. ], Step = 256
->LBA = 6 023 578, Step = 256 [Drive is not ready!!!]
Software reset... Ok

Then I get errors on every attempt to read an LBA (I have put a 'jump' value of 256).

Also the Data Extractor utility shows red on DWF, ERR, ABR registers.

Any ideas what this could be?
Thank you
KC

DFL..FRP Helps here in such cases. If you are lucky the various types of errors may go.PC 3000 also has this key fix in udma version.
Salvation too has a one key fix but not reliable for your type of errors.
