First time doing this, and i'm uncertain about everything.

Just connect one probe to a known ground on the adapter and perform a continuity test with your multimeter. :o

Okay i added the ground line, it passes continuity, wasn't really sure where on the USB adapter i could connect to so i alligator clipped onto the bottom of it. Here is a photo:

After changing COM port settings to: 38400, NOPARITY, ONESTOPBIT, 8

I receive the error message:

"Error pulse set error; Terminal is busy"

Here is a large screenshot of the PC3K readout:

Thanks a tonne for your help so far. :)

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but did you power up the drive?

first, Rx goes to Tx, and Tx to Rx

second, PC3K doesn't use GND on the Samsung
third, don't change the the initial settings, (leave it as is, example BPS supposed to be 57600 and not 38400)

It's totally not an obvious question for me, yes the drive was not powered on during this.

After powering on the drive, i was not able to get utility initialization to finish, but i was able to get this terminal readout (which i assume indicates head damage):

Very well i shall loose the alligator clips.

Okay, terminal output from above was made using the default 57600.

I shall try again with the terminal lines swapped around, and post the results here.

getting the readout means you don't need to swap them

Yes i just figured that out. :) COM port failed to recognize the speed or read anything when the lines were swapped.

Can anyone confirm what the terminal readout means?

I wasn't able to get utility to initialize fast enough, and the knocking/rattling sounds are too concerning to leave the drive on for too long.

I am gonna treat this as a heads case and refer to a larger DR centre.

Thanks everyone. :3

Okay acelabs walked me though head map editing, but it turns out this drive does not initialise.

Code:
Family selected: M8E 2.5''(SATA)

Data transfer rate detecting
Current COM port data transfer rate..... : 57600 bps

Data transfer rate setup
Current COM port data transfer rate..... : 57600 bps
Reading passport data................... : Short passport reading error; unexpected error: Terminal command error; Terminal is busy

! Modules table used by default
Zone allocated table loading error; Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:  143, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Zone allocated table not loaded!

Value from FIPS module.................. : Error reading FIPS module; Terminal is busy
Value from BRSLT module................. : Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:  112, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Value from PARAM_DM module.............. : Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:  261, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Selected value.......................... : 4

Service Area
SA SPT.................................. : 1536
Part number............................. : Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:   92, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Password info is not loaded............. : Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:  283, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Burn-In test............................ : Read sector error (Cyl:  0, Head: 3, Sec:  112, Count:   1); Terminal is busy
Error pulse set error; Terminal is busy

Heads 2 and 3 are busted, acelabs then suggested i solder on a SATA port according to the following picture:

https://i.imgur.com/SiDDyop.jpg

Here is the edited image showing how the final COM connection worked.

Image

Another piece of advice acelabs gave me was to invest in some "dupont" connectors so i can avoid soldering next time:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/120pcs-Dupont-Wire-Male-to-Male-Female-to-Female-Male-to-Female-Jumper-Cable-/252003735445

And that is all! Thanks for reading!

or you can use a compatible SATA PCB
