I have 4 WD3009FYPX-09AAMB0 3TB drives which were all produced on the same day and all have the same problem. They are detected in BIOS if I enable IDE, but no firmware version shows. Smart does not show. I can hear platters spin, but they seem to be in standby (as not spinning full speed), but drives are reported as active, not standby. 0 sectors shown.

Boards all look very clean. Drives seem in good shape. I THINK TVS test OK.

HDAT2, MHDD, Victoria, etc., all not helpful. This just seems baffling to me as these drives seem so close to working, but I think they are just incapable of reading drive firmware. I would love to know if they are repairable with PC-3000 or not. They were pulled from a WD Sentinel by a friend who has no other information on them.

I'm considering purchasing a PC-3000 UDMA, but would like to meet someone who has one and talk with them about what the likelihood of recovering a drive (for usability, not for data) in scenarios like these with such a device is or isn't.

Try WDMarvel demo. That would be the cheapest tool to play with.

They are probably locked with WD Sentinel
