Diagnosing Preamplifire and internal electronics

Hi
Lot of times when a dead hard disk comes for data recovery , we often swap pcb or try to power on hard disk. If internal Electronics is damaged ( preamplifire short) that simply burns SMPS and donor card. ( i have few cases with seagate 40 Gb f/w 3.99)
Is there any alrernate to test internal electronics? (heads / preamplifire etc) . Is it possible using commonly available instruments like multimeter etc? or it needs advanced tool?
Any suggestion /help needed.
Thanks
