***** WD5000YS WD4000YS and WD10EAVS *****
I have tree open data recovery cases regarding WD5000YS and WD4000YS and WD10EAVS

All drives were clicking.
So I replaced the head stack on both drives (not jet on the WD10EAVS), but drives were still clicking. So I think these drives may have firmware a problem. No damage to the head stack was seen when i build it out. Both dropped in server without any reason.
Is here anybody who had experience AND suggess with WD4000YS ,WD5000YS or WD10EAVS drives. Or which tool should I use to solve this problem by myself. I have excellent experience in hard drive recovery with logical and physical sector errors or elektronik problems, but poor experience in Firmware issues.
Or, what will be the price if someone in this forum will fix the firmware issue on these drives.
I would flight together with these drives to you and I want to withstand during firmware diagnostics and firmware fixing. Is here anybody in GERMANY or in neightbour countries who could show me, how to work with PC3000, Atola-insight or "HD Doctor" tools. Im interested in experience exchange too.
Kindest regards Thomas, Germany

how do you disable head by head?

I have the same problem with one of my drives... I got lot's of stuff on it that I need back.
Mostly files from school and audio recordings.

Can anyone help me out here please. I have not did any surgery on the disk that needs to be recovered.

For practice, I tried to replace the heads from 2 other working disks with the paper method, but I got the same result. All clicking now.

I'm quite a techhead but I can't understand what I did wrong. The heads didn't touch each other.

I am going to practice a bit more on working drives I think, or can anyone here help me out.

WD5000KS is not the drive to learn on.

99.999% impossible without special tools and knowledge

Really? I didn't think it was that difficult to replace the heads (yet I wasn't successful), the platters stay aligned when open.

What would the tools include?

I'm really desperate here to recover it without having to spend an arm and a leg for it.

If you haven't read lately that WD has alignment problems and opening a disk in a non clean room environment causes dust and durt to get into it. If you are afraid to pay a pro for services I think now here you can find a nice WD alignment tool that is running around 4300 dollars or so on this one. You can invest in this and try to go on like you are. But considering you have opened this drive and attempted two head swaps on it already........ummmm...... not a lot more to say on this one. Before ever opening a drive it is better to get someone who knows and understand the function of a WD to look at it for you. Not all the time do heads need to be swapped on these drives. Sorry but you are kind of in a mess now and there is no easy way to help you and no answer that can be given on this one to get your data back for you.

Kekke,

Send me the drive and i'll check what can be done for price.
Continue like this and you'll kill your data.
Your choice.

poehere,

I think you didn't read me good, the head swaps have been done on the same 'model' disks that i bought.
The actual drive that has crashed, has not been opened or touched in any way. Even the seals are still there.

I bought 2 of the same model disks to see if it was possible to do it myself...

What I can say is that I opened one of those bought disks and just closed them again and it worked perfectly again...
But not after swapping heads... so yes it must be the alignment of the heads where I failed.

I am starting to understand that this is a real pro job... respect for you guys

I might add that the actual PCB of the crashed drive is okay, I can confirm this because I have let another working HDD run from the PCB that came from the crashed one. So the actual problem is inside.
