overcapacity use of a drive

is it possible to use a 200GB device as a 300GB with a simple firmware upgrade? is it even possible to change the usable size?

The actual usable size? Sure, just compress the drive. Otherwise, you're out of luck. You can't change the internal physics of a drive with a firmware upgrade.
