This sounds like it may make things harder.
The one plus may be that data degradation is less likely, but on the other side of things if the write element fails it may do more damage then before.
I would say this is something that we won't know until we see it.

Despite the fact that HAMR sounds more or less like HAMMER... and it makes me think... we will continue seeing the legacy UAFD : User Assisted Fallen Drives

Hi Friend,
Thats the good news for Data Recovery field but bad for end users and HAMR Team should also work with data protection ,as the techonology develops the problems are more effectively develop as we go in our past ,you think about 20 years back as at school time we store our data at our copy or our note book and at that time we dont have any latest problem ,what the new generation have and go more than that about 2000 /5000 years back as at that time if we are having this type of problems than we dont have our moral books and all .(as limited moral books /Data and so many virus including hackers)..
So dont worry if technology develops than problems of data security is also develop into multiplication ..
Also and always if something is postive for faster and large data storage than there is some bugs also ,as no technology is perfect and we people are here to find and rectify the problems .

I know that, this was an "old" technology, i have read it already but another brand call as TAR (Thermal Assisted Recording). 
There is many drives wich have this tech.
