REQ: external RAID 5 advice

August 3rd, 2009, 13:44

Hello,

Now that I have suffered data loss from a hard drive failure and I did not have a backup I want to avoid this in the future.

I would like to get an external raid 5 (or 6) system that can hold at least four drives.

I would like to know what people here recommend.

Thank you

What are your opinions on the Drobo units?

I received one for evaluation about 12 months ago from a distributor and I was pleasantly surprised. The unit was very easy to setup and allows different capacity HDD's. We deal with a lot of photographers who are looking for a solution like this and I know quite a few of them are now using Drobo's. I was able to pull drives out while operating and the rebuild was quick and easy - although I would never want to see one of these in for recovery - I bet they are next to impossible to figure out.

I see on their website that they have a bigger unit available. I always recommend that a mix of manufacturer HDD's are used to make the unit a little more reliable.
