Can it really recover data from major hard drives manufactures ?

Theoretically, yes. But for practical, commercial applications - NO.

I've seen one in a lab but have not yet seen real life results.

To put it simply, you can read the low level data, but trying reconstruct it into meaningful data is the problem.

What is the difference between this and "Signal Trace" that ActionFront promoted? I'd be needing to see a lot more unrecoverable projects before I'd spend more than $500,000 on this unit.

The difference is the Signal Trace is able to recover real data from some drives

The difference is that Guzik's seems to be a real hardware tool, while Actionfront's was fakeware (*)
(*) also known as vaporware, marketing promotional tool, or in simpler words ... just a big lie 8)

I'd like to see some proof.

Actionfront woudn't be the first to create a fictional tool to get extra good press. I'm sure IBAS claimed to have such a device too. Don't forget Data Clinic with their EMAK, (then they started to sell Salvation Data products???) and Retro Data with their 20 ton P.E.T.S (Platter swap tool)

the SignalTrace is real thing
I saw it myself and I saw it recovers data

There is no magic just pure science and lots of work

I'm curious to know the value of the data on the drives that would make systems like Guzik and Signal Trace a viable option.

was it just one model of western digital or several?

probably all from the Enterprise range :O) . Signal Trace was good and they made their money back selling it to US gov.. Also Nick made money in the end by selling AF to Seagate./

I personaly think money was made off the back and brains of Russian nationals.

AF was miles behind in 2001/2002 Sadly some really clever guys ended up in the US

The best man-brain for reverse HDD firmware luckily still lives in Moscow so I don't care much  and he is the real GURU
