Dell RD100 Hard Disk

February 9th, 2011, 11:33

Hi All,

Im hoping someone can help me here, but after reading some other forums im worried its a no go. Anyway lets give it a try, i had a dell server with a backup drive that used RD1000 tapes (harddrives). Now i have 6 of these catridges. I want to be able to take the hard drives out wipe them and then use them as normal harddisks. Now i dont care how this is done. I.e the data on them i want to wipe anyway but dont want to pay for it to be done, and then just be able to use them. I know there is firmware thats stopping this. Anyway of removing it / putting another version on or anything just to make them usable as anything other than security risk paper weights ?

The drives are locked and can only be used in the RD device while in that condition. You can get a DR firm to remove the locks from the drives so you can use them on something else.

AFAIK there is no free method to remove those locks from those drives, but I may be wrong

Not to be rude - I hope your wrong :) cos otherwise i gotta put them back together and pay a company take them away and wipe them as eitherway i cant let the data kick around. Was just hoping i could do it myself then maybe reuse the hardware and save the educational establishment i work for some money.
