Hard Drive Logic Board "MEMORY" replacement.

Hi aLL..I am new in forum and sorry for my bad English.I have a question about hdd.

I changed memory module in a dsl modem and it still works perfectly.(8mb to 64mb)
what would happen if i change memory module on a hdd logic board?
You know, memory module determines hdd cache size.
32mb memory module gives 32mb cache.If i change this memory chip with 64mb, what happens?

Will hdd work?
If it works,can we have 64mb cache?
If we cant 64mb cache, can we have it by doing something else (for an example,firmware update or fw hack?)

Personally I don't see the risks of installing incompatible RAM (& cost of getting that RAM), as being worth the small performance change (perhaps there will be no detectable change at all!) when changing from 32MB to 64MB RAM (as you mentioned in your example).

Also, you would need to know the maximum usable RAM size for your specific PCB, otherwise any attempt to increase it beyond that amount, could be a complete waste of your time/money.

If you really, really want to do this and if you accept the risks (including the drive becoming unreliable if the new RAM is incompatible), then why not try on an unimportant drive? You can replace the original RAM chip, if you are not successful.

I would not spend any time on this myself...

would it be worth it, i don't really think so. i think the cost/risk is to high, just buy a new drive....but as a proof of concept & soldering skills practice,... why not. but like mentioned earlier, i wouldn't really spend to much time, id rather spend m,y time practicing the swapping of NVRAM chips off of PCBs, or Drive rebuilding

Another question, lets think that i changed the ram module.
Can we edit hdd firmware?Is it possible?

Personally, I don't think it is good to waste other people's time, by asking questions which are "not so important". I will make sure not to give you a long reply, in case your question is again "not so important" for you

I did change faulty RAM chips on PCB's in several occasions, but in general it is hard to proof RAM errors. As far as I know only Samsung ESTOOL can test RAM. If I'm wrong , please, correct me.
