How to recover a file whose beginning was overwritten

Looks more as if the largest part of the file was overwritten if you expect some WAV or AVI file for example. Would it be an idea you tell us what file type you think the file is? Also tell how the file got this way, for example did you 'undelete' it? We're not mind readers.
