From what I read on Seagate 7200.11 forums - the firmware problem only affects drives manufactured in Dec 2008 ????
Can this be correct? We have been seeing drives with similar symptoms (0 LBA, SMART and BSY) since July/Aug 2008 and probably before.

I have read elsewhere that drives after Dec 2008 are unaffected, and the 6 months previous to that are? and as there is around 1 million drives manufactured every month, that gives us 6 million drives with the fault potentially.
Maybe someone knows a more accurate figure??

According to the document 0 day is the first Saturday from 1st July in yy - 1
So:
08381
YYWWD
yy-1 = 08-1 = 07 (2007)
Ist Sat in July 2007 is; the 7th
Weeks are next two figures ..
38 x 7 = 266 days
then add 1 day for the day of week = 267
so, 7th July 2007 + 267 Days = 31st March 2008 ???
Or do I need a new calculator ?

Maybe that is all Seagate can afford to repair at this time....

I wonder if the 7200.12 is just as SH1T ?
Should have stayed with the trusted Conner platform!
Trying to use the same code base thro all products is not going to be good.. Cheap but maybe you lose some inventivenes

Perhaps these were designed by ex Maxtor Dia Max 9 Engineers ?
Grrr
January 24th, 2009, 16:41
Nothing to do with Maxtor engineers. AFAIK

"time to market" pressure and demand for low prices are the cause of everything. You can make good products at a reasonable price and refer to a different target or build crap drives and sell "as-is", or put on the market unfinished products, and so on. The same old story. Really, no one need 1 TB drives on a 3,5" . It's the market that makes the "need" for it. Mostly, large drives are bought by end users to store emuled porn and warez and movies. What I still don't get is why people still rely on these time-bombs to store critical data. Again, welcome money.
