Can anyone tell me how to access the service area on these drives. Obviously since this has a zif interface it cant be accessed the same way as sata or pata interface. I have searched everywhere for a solution. In the process I found tons of material on every other drive except these. Seagate doesnt even make these drives anymore. Any help would really be appreciated.

I have the zif to ide adapter. I can see the drive. But where to connect tx and rx? All of seagates hard drives have these pins except the 1.8 zifs. PC3K doesnt even support this drive but there has to be a way of accesing the firmware.

I would offer the wonderful person who helps me all the nice files I found in my search for a solution to this problem but they probably wouldnt need them or have them already.

The PCB is covered up. I went to all the local hardware stores for a star screwdriver small enough but they didnt have it. Even the MicroCenter in Chicago didnt have one that small. I will have to order it online I guess.

I may be able to open it by sanding down a flat head screwdriver and using that but I would rather not. You know, "Right tool for the job"

if i can get the pcb to my hand, maybe not need more than half hour to figure out the serial port.
Maybe you can do that to if you take a deep look into the pcb.

ps: maybe you need to measure some times...

Well, it does for hitachi and toshiba 1.8" drives. But the SA on those drives is accessed through the pata interface and doesnt any other connection. That fact alone suggests that this drive needs some sort of serial connector to access the service area. The zif to ide connector I bought has jumper settings for slave and master. I tried it and no joy. They label on this adapter said those pins are used for couple of hitachi models. I thought I would try it anyway but didnt work.

It probably is but the smallest I could find around here is a t6.

I use a filed down flat tip precision screwdriver.

I just tried that. They are in pretty tight. They were starting to strip so I stopped.

Home Depot sells a Husky brand Torx driver with interchangeable tips that includes T4/T5.

The nearest home depot is 60 miles away. I have to go to that area tomorrow anyway so I will be picking them up. I tried again today in all the local hardware stores, radio shack, and walmart and still nothing under t6.

The more I learn about hard drives, the more Im impressed with the things that you guys have been accomplishing. Reading some of this stuff is like reading a whole different language and I guess it is in some ways.
