cleaning the platter

hello everybody
i have some questions and i need professional help please
1- can i clean the platter with soft cloth like those for clean glasses o there is any other substance?
2- i have a maxtor hdd 40 gb diamondmax plus 8 with only one head i do change the platter to another one identical but now is not detected by bios and HDAT2 show the disk with 0 bit and is not able to repair the disk it make errors so can i retrive the data from this disk??

What type of professional tools do you have available for you to use to work on the SA of this drive. Tell us what you have available and might make it a little easier to give you some advice on this one. Plus did you do all this work in a clean room or is that why you are asking us how to clean the platters on this drive did you not follow correct procedure on this one?

the disk was brought to me from a client and it was opened and had touched with finger on the platter this is the Second time I open the disk I have a small self make glass case clean <60%> I use to change Head on it one time and is ok now with this I clean the platter with soft clothe and after resembled the disk its make clicking noise I don't have professional tools I always work with recovery programs other ways I sweep the PCP, can you help??

top surface contains no data. should not make a difference.

If U always use only progs and don't have tools, U shouldn't open client drives anywhere I think...
First U have to diagnose the problem, without opening a drive's clean area. This is usually not possible without tools.
Now U probably have several problems and it makes it pretty hard to recovery that drive.
Someone with tools and knowledge should be able to do it, but I think it is beyond your current capabilities.

yes the was opened and I test the PCP it was dead so I got another HDD exactly similar and i decide to sweep the platter to the good one so I see a finger print on both side so i clean it with soft clothe now I'm asking if this is the cause of clicking? did you recommend other way to clean the platter?

1. this is an another platter from another disk
2. the platter are upside down allready when comes.
3. the platter is still dirty (fingerprints) and the head gets dirty too.
4. the platter is a little bit dirty and overheated the head, wich is died then.
5. the platter have some dust or scored allready and this eats up the heads.
6. the donor drive uses different type of head/preamp/SA location
7. the platter is miss-aligned

Any of these can cause clicking, you need TOOLS for diagnoes it.
But if i am right you have one great mix of these...

I am using my own mix for liquid wich have huge % of industrial isopropyl alcohole (>99%), and some more parts.
You should not ask the recipe.

In professional labs, almost all the things is special, you should know this...
