Maxtor 320GB 2700

December 23rd, 2009, 17:22

Hi All
My Maxtor HDD fell down from half meters height while in operation (While it was in computer case)
I send it to multiple places for recovery and they say the HDD's shaft is broken, does that mean there is no hope for fixing it AT ALL?

Fist time I turned on the computer, it said that Boot.ini cannot be read.
2nd time, it started to boot Win XP but it was UBER slow and when it reached at the screen where you chose users, it gave me an error.
for 3rd time I used UBUNTU livecd to boot, to see if my data is there or not, ubuntu loaded, and it showed every partition with their names, but htey couldn't be opened.
Since then each time I tried to boot with that HDD, it was like the 2nd time,
BUT, once I put the HDD into another working PC and it mounted one of my partition - the first one in fact - , all my data were there! and after that the computer tried to mount all other partitions, and it failed. we restarted and then the boot prossess became slow again just like the 2nd time I turned on my PC.
We send it to professional companies and hey say that the shaft is broken and it's stopping the reader to read the data...

Are you SURE there is hope?

even if the spindle is broken it can still be recovered. in your case if the data is visible it shouldn't even be very hard.

That's great news for me guys, thank you... :D
but since I live in Iran - where has the worst HDD recovery companies - I don't think I can get it fixed here ...
Dunno if I can send it to a company outside without paying too much money ...

ah ok.
If you send this to my lab, you need to pay only for sending, and finally you can download your data without extra price. ;)

That is sooo kind of you :)
But again, since the fastest internet speed here is 128 kb - yes bit - per second,so it would be useless :(
Thank you very much for your offer :)

How much does it cost If I send you my broken HDD and a healthy HDD (also 320GB), and you send me the healthy HDD containing recovered files with my Broken HDD? (without counting payment for me sending it)

Good news everyone! ... at least, for me ...

We took it to another company and they said the shaft is a little broken but mostly your HDD have bad sectors :)
And they said they will change the circuit beneath the hard disk, because it has some problems, and then they begin recovering data sector by sector for 2~3 weeks.
I have not gave me HDD to them yet, but I a little bit worried. what if they used a simple software to recover it?

Is it dangerous? (I read about it being dangerous in other thread).
Should I stop them from recovering if they are going to use a software for recovery?

It sounds kind of suspicious that they would say the shaft is broken AND it has a bad PCB but the main problem is bad sectors and its going to take 2-3 weeks...

1. thats a long time
2. either the spindle is broken or isn't
3. either the pcb is broken or isn't

Yeah, it seems it was all nonsense the guy who send the HDD to the company said. :)
What the company said was that we can fix it and it will take us nearly 2 weeks.

none of the companies here don't have a clean room for opening HDDs, so they can't fix anything inside HDD.
I'm worried that what if they use a cheap software like HDD Regenerator ad destroy all my data?

So, I'm asking you, what sort of questions I'd better ask to make sure they don't mess up with my HDD?

Re: Maxtor 320GB 2700

If it has fallen, it is a MUST to have a clean room and inspect the drive internals as the very first move.
such a drive MUST not be run for 2 weeks.
So it is a real trouble that there is no adequately armed company for such interventions.
