SMART structure on Matrox Hdd

Hi everybody!

I have some question about SMART.
Where stored the SMART data on Matrox hdd (DM+8)?
Maybe a part on the PCB and the other part on the SA ...
Can modify it with low level format or any other tools?

Make an experiment.

Let's assume PCB holds the SMART info. Get a drive with SMART value under warning (yellow sign) inspected by HDDSCan or MHDD. Next, swap the PCB with exact donor from "healthy SMART" drive, check the SMART value of the inspected drive once again. Will it change to "healthy SMART value"?

Is it only for Maxtor drives ? What about Seagate ? Samsung, etc ?
Do this, and you'll find out the answer yourself.

For the 2nd question :

Low level format works in LBA mode (user's sector area) only. SMART is in UBA mode (Firmware area) which is out of reach from any software that only has access to LBA mode, so the answer is obvious.

Smart sectors are stored in the SA.
U cannot directly modify them. At least not without special tools or knowledge of vendor commands.

G-list is a part of SMART ?

No, G-list is a part of translator, but Smart table have some data from G-list.

No, G-list is reallocated sector and current pending sector list in translator, and both reported in SMART as well.

erm.... you can reset Maxtor SMART parameters without special tools... You just need to know the special commands

eeeeeeeeeh Guru... if I had 5 balls I'll be a flipper (pinball) . And on some drives you have to replace the entire SMART data... don't give false illusions to people, otherwise you'll have to tell them the entire command set LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL !!

Yes, on maxtor, with special techno commands, You can reset the smart.
But if You have G-list problems, this will not solve your problem anyway.

(The smart will cleared for like start stop count:1, and so on, but still failed with a lot of reallocated sectors....)

All drive have one (or more) module for store the reallocated sectors accounts.
But all drive have limited by space for this module.
If the module is full, the G-list is full or can be overflow, like this: "bad sector in #0000 0001, #0000 0002, #0000 00" (end of space)

the drive spin up. Is it correct?
I assumed in safe mode the motor did't spin up.

If the drive not recognized in bios, the SA have some corruption/damage!
In this state, you can't do anything on the drive!
None of these tools can help you, if the drive not appears on the bios.

No, in safe mode the drive not spins up.

If You need the data, I suggest to stop what You doing, because You can easily mess up the chance to get the data back.
I have seen a looot of this drives in dr, some % of these can dead completely during the imaging process, and can ended up like this (link below), if the user don't know really and crystal clear what he is doing!

I can refurbish this drive for you, or even recover the data cheap, if You don't want to "McGuyvering" alone...
