Which tool is better considering Cost - Benefit?
PC3000 UDMA For Windows + Data Extractor (Ace Laboratory) Or Data Compass Standard Vs HD Doctor (Salvation Data)

ccamargol,

PC3K's price is based on region, I can't tell for sure about your price. And also the price of DR cases needing any of them in your country might not be same with others.

PC3K has almost all major brands utility, whereas, HD Doctor is sold separately for each brands.

I'm just trying to be objective here.

No contest PC3000 UMDA + Data Extractor.
But as you say it depends on cost & what you can afford.
I've had a SD Data Compass Standard & didnt like how the software kept hanging & has put me off buying from them + if reselling you lose a lot & there is no support unless you pay lots for it for the new owner.

Have you looked at Atola Insight? Cheaper than PC3000 & better than SD.
Worth looking at.

DC needs a serious update to even be considered a competitor against Atola of AceLabs. Anyone can afford DC but who can afford to use it for DR when you lose jobs because its written so poorly?

I disagree.

I have Data Compass, I have had it for more than 2 years. I have used it maybe twice. Now it only collects dust.

I kindly disagree too.

My Doctors and DC are dust collectors as well. I don't know if they even function with all this dust on them.

I disagree too.

i gently disagree to the disagree :) i explain the reasons:

[for sure pc3000 is better than salvation products (for example they are poorly coded)]

in one occasion on pc3000 the standby command didn't work while on DC worked.
in another one by hot-swap on seagate F3 pc3000 failed to read any modules while DOCTOR was able to retrieve all fw of the patient.
by the way something i wish to have in DE is for drive with many bad sectors this feature: DC provide by default 4 passes.

cheers.

me too Disagree with u here

if u just look @ the updates History u will know

i almost have all SD tools (well important once only, but like the SG more)
u will notice acelab are doing VERY WELL in updates,

which means if you REPORT A BUG/PROBLEM (which i did many many times) on next update will be FIXED

back to SD, have a look @ their forum, i reported MANY MANY bugs/problems NEVER BEEN FIXED SO FAR

from this point, you will know when you Invest of Ferarri (for example) they will take of you as a Client
but Investing on KIA (sorry to tell) will never lead anywhere

sorry for the example of KIA (it is a good car) just comparing both.

btw,, about hot-swap in Seagate (you mentioned) this is not General Case, limited to few cases

another BIG issue in SD is updates, they actually NOT LISTEN customer, but i was focusing on another concept, for a PRO should be better to have all tools.

if pc3000 is Ferrari, and i would like to get a RedBull ( that nowdays is winning car )
what i should buy...

Tools help to do the work but if you do not understand the tools they do not help you at all. The real questions is not what to buy but what you know and how you can use what you buy. ACE is an excellent tool and takes time to understand and use correctly. The manuals are well written and you will have a lot of reading to do on this one. ACE is a complete tool that all drives are inside this one tool. ACE does a lot of research and updates and tries to keep the tool current for all DR needs. The DE on ACE is good and can clone from USB, IDE, and SATA drives. Has a lot of options to work with drives with problems and even recovery from files. If you have the money ACE is a great tool to take for you. ACE has also not updated manuals in sometime and so some of the new features on their tool are not documented in thier manulas. So if you are new and do not understand the drives this could lead you to problems in this one. You have to understand what you are doing to use this tool and any other tool out there on the market today.

Salvation Data does not make a one tool does it all. They make separate tools to work in drive families. Their Maxtor tool is good but there is not a lot of maxtors out there right now and so this tool has not been updated in years. But the tool does work well in Maxtor drive repair. The two major tools from SD are thier WD and Seagate which work if you understand how to use them. There is still bugs in these tools that need to be fixed and like others say they seem to add new features but not fix the existing bugs. This can lead to problems. I once head that if you are starting out SD is a good cheaper steping stone to this work and if you can master this tool and use it for your needs then the rest is not too hard to fingure out and make work for you.

DDI newest updates look good and should really help in this tool. DDI is an excellent tool for cloning and a good investment. I know many who have 5 or more in their shops for cloning only. This is worth looking into for you.

Atola is also a good tool for cloning and can clone well it is faster than DC and DE on this one but at times if you have a drive that takes a long time to report on Ready the tools can not read the drive and fails to read it and clone it for you.

Anyone can buy expensive tools and cars but if you can not use them or drive them then they sit in the garage or collect dust like others have said on this one.

No mater what you buy depends on how you can understand the HDD, how to use the tool and your needs. ACE = paid updates, Atola = paid updates after one year. DDI = free updates and SD = free updates. Many people want to go into DR becasue they feel it is the big money maker. Why do people charge so much for recovery work? One problems is donor drives and how many it can take to do one job. If you have head problems on one drive and swap out heads this can also mean more than one set of heads will be needed to do this work. So consider all you want to do and if you have time to invest into this project for learning the tools and the drives from the inside out. You need to really understand each drive series and this can takes months to learn this one. Consider a training class they are basically 1 week and fly through some parts of the tools, platter swaps, head swaps and theory on this one. Some classes leave more questions now than answered in the class. Nobody will spoon feed anyone to learn and understand this one. So what ever you buy and what ever you want to do it will take more than the money for the tools to accomplish this one.
