Good example of cheating in HDD industry.
http://www.deadondemand.com/products/digitalshredder/

In few words. These guys claim that any known method of sanitizing hard drives(overwriting, degaussing, mechanical shredding, etc) has drawbacks and bits of data can still possibly be read after these procedures. The only way to erase data for sure is using so called Enhanced Security Erase method. This manufacturer designed internal procedure should erase data from all parts of the drive including bad sectors and reserved areas. It is still under discussion in ATA8 draft and not implemented yet in modern drives. In the current version of ATA7 it works as standard Security Erase - basic internal 1-pass data overwriting.

So, they are selling that box that sends a couple of known stadard ATA commands to the drive for $10000's! Any good programmer can read ATA standard and write a basic program with exactly the same functionality in like 20 minutes.

Moreover, they are simply telling lie to people about using this method on all drives as its Enhanced mode is still on draft stage and as far as I checked supported only by modern Samsung drives.

Can you believe that?

Write them e-mail about that :)

As far as I checked new Samsungs and Toshibas support Enhanced Security Erase

Hi
Starling Very good observation made by you. I would like to ask is it possible to recover data after zero filling or using softwares like media tools professional.
Where will i get a tool to issue ATA command to hard disk? Your suggestion will help me a lot as i am studying forensic aspect of data recovery.
Thanks and Regards

If you clear G-List on the wiped drive and image that drive you will likely get some non-zeroed sectors that were put into G-List during its lifetime. Chances that it's something valuable are miserable but that's enough to call this method "uncertain".
