Need a SMD Diode for my WD2500AAJS HDD

Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Please help me with a component problem on my WD2500AAJS HDD.

DATE: 22 JAN 2008

S/N WCASE0196146

PCB Details PWB 2060-701444-004 REV A

A diode in the supply section labeled D3 is burnt out. I can't even read its no. If anyone can provide me the exact no. of that diode or better an equivalent that is avlbl as spare or best the complete card, it'd be awesome man.

I got very important data from my Recording Studio on that HDD.
There's no OS on that drive, i was just using it as a data backup drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm not very sure, if I can simply replace the PCB from another same model HDD. Do I need to change any other SMD component so that it can function properly with my HDD.

In case I can get the SMD component Diode D3, then I'll not need to replace anything at all besides that. Else I'm not very sure what all components result in the compatibility of the PCBoard with the HDD unit.

My bad luck again!
The same HDD has a burnt SMOOTH chip now.

Actually I had got the diode D3 replaced from some computer repair guy who assured that it'd work fine. I took it from him and checked, it was working fine. But I guess he simply replaced it with not the exact diode and which might have caused some kind of problem in the long run leading to the SMOOTH chip getting burnt out.
So I was wondering if you still have the PC board No. PWB 2060-XXXXXX-XXX
I can manage replacing the main processor chip. Can't replace the smooth chip as the track below also seems to have burned out.

Anybody else, pls if you have this board I'd like to buy it from you.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

A straight board swap won't work. You need to transfer the "adaptive" data from patient to donor. I believe that your board stores these data within the Marvell MCU. Otherwise look for an 8-pin chip at location U12, if it exists.

BTW, check your power supply. The TVS diodes fail when subjected to overvoltages.

I am slightly confused about your saying that a straight board transfer won't work.
What I'm trying to do is de-solder the Marvell MCU from the patient PCB and solder it on to the donor PCB that has a working SMOOTH chip and all other components.
Will that work? Or do I have to transfer only the data from the patient MCU to the donor MCU without de-soldering/re-soldering any of the MCUs?

In my case the U12 chip doesn't exist on the card.

And Im not using a HDD casing with the HDD. Actually, I have a SATA HDD with a USB/IDE-SATA converter cable and it works absolutely fine with other drives too. However, I suspect some kind of sparking or prolonged use of the HDD with improper heat convection.

If the MCU has survived, then transplanting it to the donor should work, assuming that the preamp inside the HDA is OK.

However, if you can transfer the MCU's adaptive data, then that would be a much better solution.

i don't think swap MCU will stable solution for this case. i can help rebuild PCB adapter data from hard drive even it without original PCB.

Where can I get only the SMOOTH chip? Could you suggest some vendor or a link to the vendor.
I think It'd be more sensible to replace only the burnt SMOOTH chip.

If your time is of any value to you, it would be cheaper and less destructive to your data to just send the drive to a data recovery professional. Each time you fry out the PCB, the heads are likely being slammed into the platters, causing other issues. With the right tools, a data recovery professional could have your data recovered in a day or two for less than $1000, assuming that there is minimal internal damage.

I suspect that it may be easier to get a complete PCB than the SMOOTH chip on its own. Consider also that the SMOOTH chip controls the DC-DC converters which may themselves have failed.
