The drive was working fine. The next time I plugged it into the computer, (it’s in an external case), it would not spin up. It never made a sound like it was going bad. It simply wouldn’t spin. What I believe occurred is a chip overheated. I’ve uploaded three photos and the one with the yellow circle is the suspect chip.

It looks like your motor controller chip has failed. When replacing the PCB, you may need to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip at U12 from patient to donor, but your board supplier should be able to confirm that.

If you are not comfortable with soldering, then your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to handle it.

You may also like to measure the resistances of the motor windings to confirm that none are open or shorted.

Okay, I purchased a “new” PCB that had the same model and revision numbers. I installed it on the hard drive to see if it would work. The hard drive powered up and began spinning. However the computer would not pick up the hard drive. (It is in an external case). So, I took the “new” PCB to a computer store and they swapped the U12 chip from the old non working PCB board. I have reinstalled the “new” PCB board and the drive will not spin and, of course, will not read any of the data on the drive.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, someone either ruined your ROM chip or your PCB.
We receive those cases every other day in our shop.
Procedure seems very simple, but it is a very dangerous and costly to fix once its broken.

Possible Preamp damage could be caused by doing this is wrong way, which will cost thousands to recover your data.

That's a reprehensible accusation. I will continue to refer people to their local TV/AV shop for simple soldering jobs. That's what real technicians are trained to do, unlike DR pros who do most of their work from behind a keyboard.
