It is entirely possible I did indeed insert this drive upside down in the 2.5 to 3.5" adapter. The adapters I had were unlabeled (not even the slave/master settings), though I'm pretty sure I had them right the first time, but who knows? If this is the case, what do you think died on the board? Either way, this likely killed it. Bios swap is still good though, I assume?

Resistance across the brown component .147. The audio cue on my meter does not go off when I check this component. The blue fuse measures .143, also no audio cue. The 000 component gives an audio cue, with resistance of .002, the same as if no component was there and I just touched the tips together.

There are 4 Master/Slave/CS pins at the other end of the board. The instructions are on the label.

Here is the "ATA (44) internal connector pinout":

Reversing the connector would have applied 5V to each of Data 7 and Data 8. These pins would go to the MCU, perhaps via some low-ohm series resistors.

The 000 link is testing OK. However, fuse F1 is open. That said, I don't understand why it is showing any resistance at all, unless it is only partially open, or perhaps the +5V input has another unfused load.

What resistance do you measure between the input side of F1 and ground? Use the 200 ohms range of your meter this time, rather than continuity mode. Your previous measurements would suggest that you should expect a 4 ohm "short" at this point. If so, then the combo motor control chip would be a likely suspect.

Strangely, I get nothing when the meter is set to 200. When I put it back on continuity and put ground on one side, I get 1.945 on one side and 1.947 on the other. When I reverse the leads on the meter, each side of F1 measures in the 1.84x to 1.86x range. Weird.

Hi Folks,

I swapped the bios tonight with a donor board, and I'm afraid the drive is still not recognized. As far as I could tell, the desoldering and resoldering of the bios chip went perfectly, except that it doesn't work. Any ideas?

NVRAM corrupted.

The diode or continuity test uses a higher current (1mA) and higher voltage (3V) than the other resistance ranges.

Diodes are PN junctions. These are the building blocks of transistors and ICs.

Silicon junctions require about 0.6V to turn on. However, the resistance ranges of your multimeter are limited to 0.5V and 0.1mA, so your DMM has no measurable influence on these devices.

I swapped the donor board's bios chip back to the donor board just to see if the disk would spin. It did. I put my bios chip back on the donor board, and it spun too and was recognized. No clue what was wrong before, as all connections checked out. Man, am I glad I was recommended to try that!

The drive is cloned and back I'm back in business.

sometimes the flash chip may look like it's soldered but it's not. A good magnifying glass can help to check the contacts.
