Wanted: Western Digital 500GB PCB for WD5000KS

Hello, I hope someone can help me with this. I contacted a member of this board about this late December, but he seems to have since been abducted by aliens. I hope he is ok.


I need the PCB for a Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB
It was fine then one day I my PC crashed and all I ever got was the "3 clicks of death" over and over.
Below is all of the information, including firmware version.

the BIOS doesn't even recognize that I have a SATA drive there. All the drive does is spin up, click slowly 3 times, and then spin down, only to spin up and do the cycle again over and over.

According to the info on the drive, the firmware version is B0 and the date of manufacture is March 03, 2007.

I have an electronics background from my military days working on avionics, so I can swap out the boards myself.
I really hope someone can help me with this.

can you find out any damaged part on PCB? if no i don't think your case is PCB problem. i often meet is head crash for this family. i have this PCB in stock. please let me know if you still want it. thanks.

It doesn't sound like a board fault, but if you would like to try one anyway, then this vendor includes a firmware transfer service in the price:

Hello and thank you for your replies.
What exactly do I need to check to see if the PCB is the issue? I don't see any visible overheated or burnt components or discoloration on the board. Are there voltages to check or something?

The drive isn't even old compared to my other drives, but it is old enough to not have any warranty. Like I said, it was working fine and then one day it wasn't. If I recall correctly, my wife was vacuuming that day and didn't notify me and the power went out in my office. I'm thinking maybe it got surged or something.

Is there a special check list I can go through in order to properly diagnose the problem?
I'm a disabled vet and don't make much money at all, and we are still trying to play catch-up on bills and such caused by the recession, so we count our pennies here. I'd just like to know for the best I can what the problem is before I think about diverting any cash to fix it.

The most important things I have on that drive are many, many hours of 3D modeling work.

as i said. it may got crash head that can't fix by yourself. if data it really important better is send entire drive to data recovery company for process. please feel free to contact me by email or skype if need hlep.
if you can find out the PCB has any damaged part or you do something about PCB after it gone. i willing to point you try replace PCB. but it's no in fact(just my experience) hope you get back your data soon.

some WD spin up and clicking is PCB problem. but 99% no for this case.

we pay heart trying to help people solve the problem. post no the routine! had to integrade theory, practice, experience and every case condition to said something.

Hello All:

I am having a similar problem but when I inspect the hard drive controller, I see an orange discoloration (similar color/hue when metals are overheated) at all screw sites and on the back of the board labeled E9 (an area encased in a while rectangle on the angled part of the board, it contains 2 rows of thin metallic etchings separated by a silver circle) and on the front of the board (on the bottom right hand area labeled J1). These discolorations suggest that the board could be defective; however, from the discussion here it is also possible that the head could be the problem as well since I too am getting the spin up, clicking, and spin down. The BIOS will not detect this drive as well. I have a Western Digital SE 16 500GB drive. I believe it to be SATA1, but am not 100% sure. The controller is labeled with foxconn 82K3.

I have tried this drive on a different computer- no help. I have tried making this drive a slave drive and tried accessing it- no help. I have tried putting this drive in a USB enclosure and tried accessing it on another computer- no help. I have even bought another WD 500GB se16 drive, removed its controller and placed it on my original one. When I boot up the drive, I can hear it spin up, click 3 times, and spin down. BIOS does not detect the drive as well. This leads me to think that perhaps my original controller was not damaged (despite the orange discoloration) and that in fact it may be the drive itself. I would appreciate some advice. If you need more info, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm merely here to get some help. All my daughter's baby pictures are on the drive and I only have half of the pics backed up. Thanks for the help. Take care.

Like the other poster, highly unlikely you have a pcb issue. DIY on these drives is not a joke. Way more difficult to recover than other WD drives.

Labtech, thanks for your speedy reply. According to the Western Digital website, they can diagnose the HD problem free of charge and will advise if the drive is recoverable. Have you had any experience with their Data Recovery Services? Thanks again for your advice.

Was not aware that WD itself provides data recovery service. I doubt this is the case. I know that WD has created partnerships overtime with few data recovery companies that you can find a list of on their website, such as platinum and preferred partners.
