Your copy must be a special edition. :D

Maybe a drum solo? :D Never heard anyone call hdd clicking music.
Sorry Spildit, I couldn't help noting the above.

Hi gurus,
Well, after this foreword I begin my story, maybe someone can help me (free). I have a Conner CFS420A, that behaves the same way. Spins up and down a few times then stops. It was tested with a pcb from an identical model (own pcb was physically damaged), that has no such problems. So it is definitely a motor problem in my case. I can see 3 screws on the motor cover, has anyone been successful in repairing a motor failing to reach full speed? If I remove those screws, do I get access to the spindle shaft and adding some lubricants will help? Just want to repair the drive, if possible.
By the way I have an old ST157A, same problem, not reaching full speed (led blinking 16x) is there any remedy? Thank you.

I would start by examining how a working drive behaves under fault conditions.

If you isolate the HDA from the donor PCB on the donor HDD, does the donor spin up and remain spinning?

Spildit wrote:What is the Conner MCU ? Motorola, Uxx, Ferro or ConnerTech ?

It appears to be Motorola. U12 is a Motorola special order (SC415016AFU). According to the following discussion, these were MC68HC MCUs -- 68HC11A or 68HC11E, or possibly 68HC16 or 68HC11F.

ConnerTech is another later manufacturer which turned into Exelstore.

Motorola is what you need, although just a terminal would help.

Probably worth moving patient U15 onto your donor board and trying again. Can you upload pics of top labels from both HDDs?

Here is a photo of the complete CFS420A PCB:

U15 looks like a ROM for U14 (SC415951FB) while U11 appears to be the ROM for U12.

It's in Russian ...

U15 is probably a mask ROM:

I expect that the pinout would be similar to these flash EEPROMs (except for WE* and Vpp):

http://www.romservice.ru/datashee/M28F256.PDF

Note that the CE and OE pins may be active high:

The control pin function and active level, as well as the memory contents, are user-defined.
