Why do you want a PCB?

What's the symptoms of the problem?

Why have you opened the drive?

I have not opened the drive (yet), but I cannot access the data on it. When the drive spins up, it makes an intermittent 'click' sound about every 2-3 seconds. So I am looking for a replacement controller board as a last resort attempt to get the data from it. I sent the drive to a data recovery shop and they were able to access the data, but then wanted $2500 to recover it. That was more than I was/am willing to pay (although it may be a fair price from a market point of view).

Yes, it's head/platter problem for 99% sure. The DR shop MUST have opened it to change the heads and access your data.

$2500 seems a bit high, but $1000 is not unreasonable.

I would be at all surprised that now you have refused to pay for the recovery, even if the heads are changed, your data is no longer accessible.

I dont doubt that the drive was opened - I have no idea what the data recovery firm did to the drive. But I have done nothing (but ship the drive out). I agree - $1000 is a reasonable cost to recover the files - I would have paid that. Why do you expect the data is now unrecoverable? What do you think was done to the drive at the first data recovery place?

Well, some DR companies have been known to "nobble" drives if the client refuses their quote, rendering the drive unrecoverable by others. Not saying this HAS happened to your drive, but it's a possibility.

btw, where are u based? Maybe we can point you in the direction of a local pro who can be trusted to provide the recovery at a sensible price.

Im in Austin TX. That would be most disappointing if the DR firm did something to preclude future attempts at recovery.
