Just when I was about to make a backup, 600+ GB go bye-bye! Cry me a river? I suspect my problem is board related and will buy a working board or a whole working HDD, new or used.

The following MUST Match:

ST31500341AS
Firmware: SD17
Side Code: TK

Ideally as close in date code to 09134

If you have a match lets talk!

Why do you suspect it's board related?

Also, you do realise that all 7200.11 PCB's are unique to the drive, and require modification before they have a chance of working?

The motor spins in short, regular intervals, with no clicking sounds. The drive is not recognized at all by the computer. And if I try to start up the computer with the drive connected, the computer freezes during the OS loading screen (Vista). From what I've read, it sounds like the PCB may be the problem.

No, I had no idea that all 7200.11 PCB's are unique to each drive. Could you direct me to more information on that or explain it? What kind of modification?

Thanks a lot for your help.

It does not sound like PCB problem at all.

You have some other problem, inside a drive.
It could be firmware issue, Service Area issue or Physical problem.
Unfortunately, all of those problems could only be solved by a pro.

You can find many good pro's on this forum, if data is important to you or exchange your drive under warranty.

This is likely spindle failure, or circuit failure on the spindle. It could be stiction to, but that is less likely.

I thought seagate had released a firmware update to fix this problem. Err, here.
