Hello,

I have a WD5000AAJS external 500 GB drive that it needs a new board. It spins for short time when I hook it up to my PC but it turns off afterwads, I took it to some data recovery places and they found that I need to replace the PCB which is burned. Please help to find a PCB similar to what I have.

Spec:
Western Digital: 500 GB WD Caviar SE
Model WD5000AAJS-32vfa0
Date: 10 Jan 2008
PCB Model Number:
2061-701477-100 04P

Thanks

Hello,

PCB swap on this model not helps, because have configuration chip or embeded ROM in MCU.
If you need the data, i suggest to find a pro close to you....

Some info, about why not try to replace the pcb:

Agree, you definitely need a pro for this particular case. If it was a previous model with an external ROM chip then yes you may well have been able to do it yourself with our help. In any case it doesn't actually sound like a PCB problem if it spinning up then down, more like heads.

You can trust mikippp, he knows what he's doing.

Hello and sorry for conjuring this post from the dead.

I have the same situation, and I read the thread and did not understand something.
I have a WD5000AAJS-22TKA0 HDD with a small burnt chip on the pcb,
It shows the same symptoms, it spins up and then stops.
Why wouldn't a suitable PCB replacement do the trick with this model? would trying to solder a similar new one from another HDD work?
And what method do professional labs would take to get the data out?

Thank you,

Wolf99

you can use the popular 701444 PCB instead of 701477 if you have tools can reprogram the MCU like pc3k or wd doctor or some thing like that

There is a cheap tool (WDR-UDMA or WD HD Pro, US$80 - $150) that should enable you to reprogram a replacement PCB. However, it may be that your drive has an internal fault.

Could you upload a photo of the PCB, particularly in the area of the burnt chip?
