What are the symptoms of your drive? These usually have severe media damage in my experience.

Hi

I will try to post pictures this weekend -- I bought a donor drive from ebay (very hard to find) and swapped the boards out. The dead drive spun up, mounted and copied about 3.5 gb before there was a fairly loud click and then the new board would not spin up..

I tried desoldering one side of a TVS diode near the power connecter that tested leaky with a digital multimeter -- to no avail.
Upon further investigation I discovered that the power supply I was using with my adapter was flaky (voltage wise) and may have caused the over voltage on the donor PCB. I corroborated this theory by connecting a brand new power supply to the TVSless donor and the drive spun with a clicking..

I believe that a healthy PCB with this new power supply will allow me to continue copying data. Even if there is significant file system damage -- I know how to use ddrescue and can get an image and piece together anything thats still good.

TO THOSE WHO WANTED PICS
The exact model is ST9120821AS -- Firmware = 7.01 Facility = WU.
Its a drive with an apple logo on the front that came from a MAC Mini. Im fairly certain any drive with the proper firmware and location will work for my needs.

Thanks for any help!!!

Patrick

I wish you the best of luck, but I fear drccsc will be correct.

This particualar version has "previous" for irrecoverable platter damage.

Search google for "Seagate 7.01" and see what u come up with!
